Gastroesophageal reflux, defined as the escape of the stomach contents towards the esophagus, occurs in almost 60% of infants. The fact that the valve between the stomach and esophagus in babies is not fully matured, they are usually in a lying position, their stomachs are small and they are fed with liquid food, which causes frequent reflux symptoms. Reflux is not a disease seen in infants and usually passes up to one year. However, if the symptoms persist beyond the age of 1-2 years or if there are findings that disrupt general health, it is considered a disease.

In the reflux of the baby, which is considered to be physiological; the baby grows well, is happy and enjoyable, there are no signs of illness, only after feeding, he removes the food without grinding, sometimes leaking from the rim. This removal occurs especially in challenging situations, such as sudden movements and lifting the legs in the changing position.

It can be manifested by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, extreme restlessness, crying, breast rejection, backfeeding while feeding, stubborn hiccups, slowing growth, recurrent coughs, wheezing with breathing, recurrent otitis media. With these measures, you can relieve your baby’s reflux.

There is no need for a diagnostic test for temporary reflux in infants. Diagnosis is easily made with the history and examination of the baby. The most reliable method in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease is the 24-hour pH-meter / impedance analysis known as acid measurement. Endoscopic examination is also helpful for diagnosis. Medicinal treatment is not required for temporary reflux in infants.
